2011 Boulder High Soccer Season A Success On All Accounts

The 2011 Boulder High Soccer team finished the regular season as the league Runner-Up and the #8 seed in the 5A State Playoffs. The 2nd Place finish was only the third time in 31 years that the Panthers finished 2nd or higher in league play. Strong defensive play and some critical wins against playoff bound league rivals Fossil Ridge, Fort Collins and Rocky Mountain were enough down the stretch to secure Boulder with a record 6 straight playoff appearances. The team allowed just .70 goals against a game, the second fewest goals allowed in the history of the program.

The Panthers hosted Grandview in the first round but where up able to score a few chances in each half, allowing Grandview to stay in the game. Grandview scored late in the second half on a well finished corner kick and ultimately won the game 1-0.

A terrific group of Seniors will be missed and a core group of freshmen, sophomores and juniors return next fall with valuable experience and determination to continue the Boulder High School tradition of Boys Soccer excellence on and off the field.

Boulder High Soccer Heads Into Final Regular Season Games With 3 Win Streak

Riding one of the best defenses in Colorado 5A Soccer and big goal production from seniors, Ben Kates, Ivan Ramirez, Jack Huettel and Rojesh Shrestha, Boulder High swept all three of their away Front Range League games last week (6-0 Monarch, 1-0 #3 Fort Collins, 2-0 vs. #8 Fossil Ridge). The Panthers shook up the FRL Standing and climbed to second place in the standing with the three big wins. Boulder controls its own fate and can finish as high as second place in the league if they win the last two games of the regular season. Both games are this week at home: Tuesday, Oct 18 vs. Horizon 7pm and Thursday, Oct 20 vs Rocky Mountain 7PM.

Junior Varsity plays both opponents’ JV teams at 5pm.

Boulder extends shutout streak to two games with combination of youth and experience

Boulder High Varsity continued to prove that even with four new starting defenders and one new starting goalkeeper that they can continue the Panther tradition of playing great team defensive. The Panther shut out a very physical Smoky Hill team 2-0 on Saturday and then returned to Recht Stadium on Tuesday to shut out a well organized Pomona team 3-0. Jack Huettel is showing his three years of varsity starting experience in the midfield. His strong defensive and ball possession presence helps the Panthers keep the ball in the opponents half. In the back line, three seniors, Jack Lowell, Michael Ozeroff, Ben Kates along with the exceptionally athletic freshman Miles Chow are proving difficult to break down. Sophomore Henry Huettel and his sure hands and good feet are keeping the ball out of the net.

Next up for the Panthers are Front Range League opponent Greeley West in Greeley.

The Panthers next home game is:

Thursday 9/22 7:00PM vs. Poudre High School

Boys soccer: Boulder Panthers undergo makeover

Defending league champs return 1 full-time starter

Two years ago, the Boulder boys soccer team scored a program record 68 goals and advanced to the Class 5A state quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

Last year, Boulder scored 30 fewer goals and reached the state semifinals.

Needless to say, the Panthers are finding different ways to win and they will be put to the test again this year.

Coming off yet another program-best season, the defending Front Range League champions reload with 10 new full-time starters, although eight players return with varsity experience.

“It is a big loss,” said senior midfielder Jack Huettel, the lone returning full-time starter with all-state credentials to his name. “But I think we can make up for

it. We lost some big goal scorers and some great defenders, but we’re playing really good team soccer. As a team, we can get there.”

‘There,’ to the Panthers means getting back to the state semifinals at the very least.

And the loss of so many starters isn’t as big of a deal to them as it might be to other programs.

Boulder coach Hardy Kalisher points to one statistic as a reason why he’s not lamenting the loss of so much experience as the Panthers try to make the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season and defend their first ever conference title.

“Last year our goalkeeper and all four defensive backs had a 0.6 goals against average, which was the lowest in program history,” Kalisher said. “Every one of them was a brand new starter. … It’s not a rebuilding year. That’s never the intent.”

Huettel and senior forward Rojesh Shrestha bring the most experience to the Panthers. Huettel is a three-year starter and Shreshta has been played at the varsity level for the past three years.

Kalisher will also be looking for contributions from these key seniors: midfielder Omar Bouchta, defender Ben Kates, defender Jake Lowell and defender Michael Ozeroff.

“The guys that were on the team last year learned a lot, especially from the seniors,” Ozeroff said. “We know what it takes to get to the semifinals.”

While the older players will be looked to for leadership, the newcomers will be expected to contribute.

The Panthers expect to be better at possession the ball and more sophisticated tactically this year.

“This team is creative,” Huettel said. “Last year it was very set and we had a lot of strong players in certain areas, but this year there is no weak link. We know how to break down a defense. We know how to keep the ball and we’re very composed.”

Depth will be an asset to Boulder this year.

Kalisher expects to carry 23 players on the varsity roster and as many as 18 will see regular playing time.

“Every one of them can play for a Front Range League team,” Kalisher said. “There’s no point in just wearing the uniform.”
