In the Sweet 16, Boulder High completed it’s biggest win in Boulder High Schools 28 year history with a 1-0 double-overtime victory vs. #3 seed Liberty in Colorado Springs. After 107 minutes of high quality, back and forth soccer between to very strong teams, Boulder High’s Walter Bertini scored a spectacular shot from 27 yards out to win the game. The Panthers led by some exceptional goalkeeping from senior Garrett Spenst and focused defense from Max Jaffee, Andrew Flint, Eddy Segovia and Cody Vann held Liberty scoreless.
After the big emotional win the Panther then faced #10 seed Arapahoe High School after one days rest in the State Playoff Quater-finals. This time it was Arapahoe who scored the game winner in another well played soccer game. The Panthers played with great effort and pride but seemed to still look fatigued from the grueling 107 minutes played earlier in the week. With the final score 0-1, the Panther completed a record setting season that included 70 goals breaking the previous record of 59 set in 1991.
Boulder graduates 12 seniors and returns an experienced group of 5 underclassmen with plenty of starting experience including three All-Front Range League players in midfielders Brook Assefa and Jack Huettel and defender Cody Vann.
The Panthers are looking forward to their pursuit of a 5th consecutive trip to the Colorado High School State Play-0ffs in 2010.
